It seems like they will let you haggle things down if you`re getting a lot of things. We aren`t. The only option we`re buying at this point is the paint coating (which is virtually required, it seems), window tint, and a mat for the cargo spot. Not quite enough to get them to do anything but reduce the price of installation for the third-party navi.
Plus the Prius isn`t having any trouble selling so there is much less incentive to offer stuff.

Yeah. Never get any dealer options for a new car unless you can haggle it down. That’s how we got the snow tires/rims for the Harrier before; usually they were charging some ridiculous amount of money for them.

The parking space certificate is a national thing – no matter where you live you have to file one. Even if you live out in the middle of nowhere, you have to provide proof that you have a location to put the car and that you won`t be parking it illegally at the side of the road.

That’s quite long to get a car. you must not be in a hurry, or buy a used one (but it’s not common for cars in japan I think, right?).

In your town (I forgot the name), do you have to prove you own a place to park your car ?
I read people living in Tokyo and big cities must have a police certificate to be allowed to buy a car.

Hm! I ordered my first car (a Saturn) but bought the second one off the lot just like a bottle of milk. I can’t remember how long it took to get my first car, but most likely it was in the range of a week or two.

I don’t know how many people (%) order their cars in the USA. I assume it’s always something you can do if you don’t see exactly what you want on the lot.

But yeah, 8 months is a long time. Though my friend from India had to wait something like 3 or 5 years for her first car, and longer for a phone hookup (those were the good old days!).

He did make it home last night. On the last shinkansen of the night, but better than nothing.
At least I know he won`t be sent out of the country, but it`s still a pain. It seems that they want the whole team to stay in Tokyo for the length of the project – and while we`re negotiating… at this point things aren`t looking good. I have a feeling there will be a repeat of last year. Argh.

Another one of those all-too-familiar things, a reminder that nothing is guaranteed. While it’s not at the level your husband’s situation can get to be at times, I also have been through this wringer. Back in the early 2000s I wasn’t even in the same country, for a month or more at a time… it hurts. Here’s hoping nothing flies apart and he can make it home on time!

Congratulations on your anniversary — I have to say my Japanese husband and I are overall very happy, too. We met in Kyoto in 1985 and were married in 1991.

Both of us had fetishes for the “exotic,” we both have huge “screw the other person, I wanna live in MY country” attitudes, and I admit, I married him mostly to get a spouse visa, and he married me to have kids. Recipe for disaster….two people so wrong for each other, together for all the wrong reasons, and yet….I love the guy, and he loves me, and….three kids and way too many trans-Pacific moves, we are still together, and like spending time together.
